      • lakota sandoe yoga. the empowered birthing series. 5

I first met Lakota at one of her prenatal classes 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my first. I had limited yoga experience but was able to follow the class with ease. She is so welcoming and has a very calming presence. What I was drawn to most was how she really connected the movements of my body, my breath, and my focus to the little life growing inside of me. Her knowledge and experience of pregnancy is highly reflected in her class which brought me much comfort as it was my first pregnancy. I learned how to be more connected to my pregnant body and baby as my belly grew. Four years later when I became pregnant for the second time I was not able to find the time to attend a yoga class while I juggled work and the demands of family. As I reached the end of my third trimester I was suddenly hit with panic, feeling (with good reason) physically and mentally unprepared for my VBAC attempt. I emailed Lakota hoping she could offer me some guidance and encouragement in my some what frenzied state. She was incredibly responsive and wonderful despite the fact I had really asked for help with little time to work with before baby. With only four weeks until my due date she met with me to discuss my hopes and fears surrounding childbirth. She offered me several exercises to help me address my emotions about the unplanned cesarean of my first daughter, ways to envision my upcoming birth and some recommended reading from Birthing From Within. After our meeting she emailed me a recap of what we discussed which was so helpful as I suffered from some major "pregnancy brain". Upon the completion of my homework and only a week left to go, Lakota found a time to meet with me again to work on some breathing and focusing exercises. We did some gentle yoga and a meditation exercise. She offered some ways to improve my strength and flexibility despite that it would have been more ideal for me to have been practicing starting earlier in my pregnancy. I left our meeting feeling much more relaxed and prepared for child birth. I have not taken her child birth classes but I am sure they are insightful and educational. I love how she shares similar philosophies to me in regards to health and nutrition, valuing a natural childbirth but also recognizing that there are appropriate and necessary times for medical intervention. I highly recommend Lakota's yoga classes especially if you are an expecting mother. I was able to welcome childbirth with more calm, confidence and knowledge.

When I came to see Lakota in her home for yoga therapy, I didn't know what to expect. I'd had yoga therapy once before in a studio and found the practitioner stiff and a little impersonal. My experience with Lakota could not have been more different, and I came back for three sessions in all. In our first session I was immediately at ease. The room we were in was spacious and airy, and Lakota's presence was vibrant and grounded. We spent more time than I anticipated discussing my reasons for seeking yoga therapy and background information like injuries and my personal yoga practice. I felt comfortable enough to share about traumatic experience and Lakota invited us to think together about how my needs could be met in our session. The first session demonstrated Lakota's sensitivity. Lakota skillfully used touch at key moments to ground and soothe me. At one point, as she was cradling my head, I found her mere presence and the sensation of being held very moving. This is a moment I have revisited since in order to access the feeling of being supported. In subsequent sessions, we considered some requests that I brought to her and I was impressed by her creativity and ability to modify our practice to fit my requests. At its best, our practice felt like a mutual collaboration with a skilled practitioner as a guide. I highly recommend working with Lakota for her versatility, sensitivity, and obvious depth of practice.

I have been interested in starting yoga for a while but the lack of knowledge and clear instructions for a beginner in a large class discourage me from following through. That's why the sessions with Lakota have been so awesome. She takes a personal approach and focuses on exactly what you need that day and in general what you want to take out from this experience. Every time I walk out I feel refreshed and renewed. Since this is personalized to my needs at the time I go to work after being able to give 100% of myself and with a new clear purpose. My body feels lighter and healthier. My mind is calm and clear of worries and anxieties. I am also learning so much about the wisdom that yoga provides and taking it with me in my every day routine. I highly recommend everyone tries this. This is fantastic in my opinion for beginners like me and for advance yogis because everyone needs to refocus at times.

I met Lakota at a prenatal yoga class and later also attended her awesome empowered birthing classes. Lakota is very passionate about birthing and has a deep knowledge about different methods of getting ready for it. After my baby was born I’ve noticed my energy is getting a little depleted and I’ve decided to try her private therapeutic yoga sessions. I didn’t know what to expect, since this was my first encounter with therapeutic yoga but I loved everything about it. We’ve talked about my goals, practiced different breathing techniques and then continued with gentle stretching yoga poses. My favorite part came after it - the restorative yoga with her healing touch. Lakota made sure we had time for two or three long restorative poses that were chosen specifically for my issues where she propped every muscle in my body so that my body could melt in to the ground and relax. During the pose she was helping me stay in that blissed state of doing nothing with her calm, beautiful and almost poetic guided meditation. I’m a big fan of restorative yoga but this was even better it’s like having a private class 101 with extra support and healing touch that helps you deepen the pose, relax even more and gives you needed time and space to figure out stuff. I always left Lakota very calm but also felt a bit wiser and able to see what my body needs at that moment. After our sessions she always checked in to see how I'm doing and offered more guidance. I feel very homey at her practice space and love chatting with her about anything and everything. I strongly recommend you to work with Lakota!

I started working with Lakota in mid-March 2017 for private therapeutic yoga sessions, finding that I needed to add a new set of tools to my coping "toolbox," so to speak. She welcomed me into yoga, as I am a beginner, and was sensitive to my needs--tailoring her repertoire of moves to my experience and need to re-center. Attending regular sessions with Lakota has been very helpful for helping me carve out a space for self-care, recognize my body's needs, and become re-attuned to my basic worthiness/goodness. Lakota's gentle approach shows that she cares about her clients and her skills show years of therapeutic yoga practice. She has been very communicative around scheduling and her practice space is open and inviting. It would be helpful to have a bit more follow up on new moves practiced after a session and suggested yoga readings. Overall, I highly recommend that anyone looking for a way to reconnect to themselves through yoga connect with Lakota.

Lakota is one of the most genuinely caring and authentic instructors I've had the pleasure of working with. At the same time, her depth of knowledge - from the books AND from experience - is crystal-clear. She has a wonderful way of balancing a poetic, intuitive sense with that knowledge in a way that prevents it all from feeling too "heady" and analytical. She also works collaboratively, frequently checking in with how things are for the student. All of that is also informed by a thorough intake discussion and form. She's clearly a professional, but at the same time incredibly warm and accessible. When it comes to logistics, she is flexible and understanding, but is also transparent about what she needs. If only we could all communicate that openly. I can't recommend Lakota enough!

I had the opportunity to take prenatal yoga from Lakota and liked her approach so much that I registered for private birthing education sessions with her. Lakota has a wonderful personality which is incredibly warm, positive and fun. She has a natural gift to work with pregnant women and to also assist them throughout their postpartum phase. Lakota's teachings and guidance provided me with the tools that I needed to prepare for birth. The poses and meditations that I learned from her greatly assisted me in the final stages of my pregnancy and also childbirth. I would highly recommend Lakota - she is dedicated to helping her clients identify their highest potential. I would absolutely work with her again!

Lakota is an empathic and sympathetic teacher who helped me enormously during an 18-month stay in hospital. I cannot recommend her warm and friendly expertise highly enough.
